Conservas with Sea Sisters

Sea Sisters is the first British fish cannery in England formed out of the Covid Pandemic by Charlotte and Angus. The name Sea Sisters name comes from their two daughters who demonstrated the immeasurable importance of Sisterhood.

In the past few years I created a series of textile wombs formed from different materials and practices. Having seen them, Charlotte and her Sister in law Katie contacted me to get involved with a project for International Women’s Day 2024. For this project, all aspects of the cans (or “Conservas”) were fully created by women - from the fishing industry to food producers and finally the artists. Having previously worked on a fishing net series (you can read about Weaving in the Rubbish here), we thought they would be perfect to work into the wrapper for the Conservas.

I was then mailed a piece of washed up fishing net and a mussels bag to create something that would tie into the project. I went through the same washing process as I did with my fishing net series and carefully separated each of the usable fibres. As it was all in the spirit of International Women’s Day, another Womb series felt appropriate.
